Iceland, Nord Plus 2013 2nd mobility

Here you can read the report from all of the students and teachers in the Icelandic mobility enjoy!! ;)

I liked the Icelandic horses and the food. It is a amazing how organic everything is here – the food, the heatingsystem etc.
Everyday activities are given us an opprtunity to improve our language skills and knowledge how to saty healthy.
It is sad, that  we had so sort time to be in the Iceland. We would liket to be here a lot more time, because our journy to Iceland was too long and this meeting should have been also longer – to have more time to look around.

Iceland has got very beautiful nature – it is absolutely different from ours. We don´t have so many mountains and hot springs. It was very nice in Blue Lagoon.

The project Promote HLS – Sports as a healt forge (21.-25. October 2013, Iceland)
This was the next meeting in this project. The topic of it was about sports as a part of HLS. The Estonian participants were Lauri Põrk, Agnes Karula and Ander Tomingas with their teacher Liis Rüü.
Our team was and is still very glad, that we decided to come. The reasons, why we are thinking so, are:
1.      Iceland has got very beautiful nature – it is absolutely different from ours. We don´t have so many mountains and hot springs. It was very nice in Blue Lagoon.
2.      Every day activities are given us an opprtunity to improve our language skills – as a teacher I find out, how many different languages my students can speek. They got to know and had a chance to communicate with Finns in Finnish (also in Estonian), Latvians in Russian, and of course they had do use English. It was and is still difficult for us to understand or to say something in Iclandic (sorry).
3.      We got to know the history of Iceland. The trip to the Church was wonderful.
4.      My students are all the 4th year chefs (this is their final year in our school) – so they were very interested in local food and they had a chance to look at the school dormitory canteen also. They really liked the horse meat.
It is sad, that  we had so sort time to be in the Iceland. We would liket to be here a lot more time, because our journy to Iceland was too long and this meeting should have been also longer – to have more time to look around.
The spectacular view  - we will miss it!

In spite of that Iceland is so far away from our homes,we had a nice time with great people.

Icelanders are really friendly and hospitable. Thanks to the project "Nord plus" for giving us the chance take part in this great journey.
We had fun with many people from different countries. It was great time while we made videos and we had a lot of tour to really interesting places. For example on the first day we went to a horse farm , second day to the oldest stone church in Iceland, and third day to the Hofsos to swim in a outdoor pool. Iceland is a really beautiful country, it was really cold some days but we didn't give up.

The dormitory was really fine and clean, and it is good that it was next to school. We had beautiful view from the window - mountains and ocean. We had never been hungry, we had breakfast, coffee time, lunch, dinner and all that was also in dormitory. We didn't have to go for eating somewhere and the food was pretty good.

It was nice to get new friends from different countries and practice in movie making. A good opportunity and best memories.

Group members: Anastasia Loginova (Latvia), Ida Nurminen(Sweden), Halldór Ingólfsson(Iceland), Brigitta Susi(Finland), Lauri Põrk (Estonia).

In the footsteps of our forefathers.
Early Monday morning me and my two students met at the airport Vigra for a week in “Snæland”. Its over 1100 years since the first Vikings left the west coast of Norway to discover Iceland. Now we were on our way to take the same trip.
We were exited for what we would experience on our trip, and to meet new people from different countries ond cultures. After 18 hours of traveling whit plain and bus, we arrived at Sauðárkrókur, and checked in at the dormitory.
Here in Sauðárkrókur we have experienced the culture of Iceland, and as a teacher it has been interesting to meet other teachers, cheer experience and hear about their daily work situations. One of the main interests here in Sauðárkrókur is horses, so horseback riding has been a must during our stay here. We have also experienced the hospitality of the Icelandic people and great local food (thanks Rita).
The possibility of taking a bath in the Blue lagoon was also a nice experience for a man who loves all types of water activity.
A visit to Holar and the church there gave us the feeling of Iceland’s history, especially when our guide song an old hymn which was written by a man on the last days of his life. This was one of the special moments on this memorable trip to Iceland.
Thank you all for this experience.

It all started kind of rough for us four Swedes going to Iceland. At Arlanda we got arrested by the security police, since we had passed a no entrance passage after having got lost. I guess we didn´t look as terrorists in the end, cause after security checks and questioning we vere released and could get on board of our flight.
Almost the first impression we got from Iceland was a wonderful hot bath in „The blue lagoon“, where hot water from the underground made small lakes in the middle of a big lava-field. The sunset painted everything in pink and lilac colours, and the steam from the hot water made it all look a bit unreal.
After a long bus trip we finally arrived in Sauðarkrokur, got welcomed by our hostess Rita, and fell into our beds tired as babys.
In the morning we met with the other participants in a more „official“ way, and started to get to know each other. We got to hear about the Iclandic swimming tradition and learned that there are plenty of swimming poools on Iceland, while it is so cheap to heat them up by the hot springs. The students started to work with their films, and in the evening they spent time with their Icelandic friends while we teachers completed the day at Ritas wonderful house. We had a fabulous fish soup and afantastic dessert, and went to bed in a great mood but stuffed like turkeys.
Wednesday morning we went to a horse farm and met with lots of beautiful Iclandic horses. Some of us went for a ride and tried the „tölt“ , the typical Icelandic horse gate, wich is a very comfortable way to ride. The Icelandic horse is very friendly and calm, I would really like one of my own at home in the backyard! J
In the evening we went to Holar, an historical place where arch bichops have lived for hundreds of years. It was snowing a lot, making it all look like a Christmas card, and even the teachers got like children and enjoyed throwing snowballs at their students J
Thursday was a working day, and the students worked hard to finish their videos.

Thursday Iceland 24.10.
The students worked all Thursday to finish their videos. We teachers saw a beautiful film about Icelandic horses. It showed wonderful pictures from Iceland, but also how important the horses are to the Icelanders. As you can´t bring a horse back to Iceland once it left the island, it´s a big decision to take your horse abroad to compete.  It was very moving to see the horseman say goodbye to his friend.
After lunch I went for a run. Sadly it was cloudy all week, so we didn’t get to see much from the mountains, but you could imagine the majestic silhouettes among the clouds. I went to a steep gully and followed it for a while, enjoying the sound from the rapid water. Then I climbed the steep incline to get back to the trail. It was full of grotty lupines, and I could imagine the beautiful colors when it blossomed.
In the afternoon we went to Hofsos for a swim. The pool was situated with amazing view over the ocean, and many pictures were taken.
Then we went to a house nearby for the last-evening-party. We enjoyed the warmth inside, while our hostesses froze their asses off outside by the grills. The grilled lamb with potato salad disappeared quickly into hungry stomaches, and then it was time to vote for the best posters and videos.  It was fun to see what the students had accomplished over this days, and all the videos where very good. The rest of the evening we played games and mingled with our new friends.  At about ten the bus took us back to the dormitory, so we could pack our last things.  At midnight we said goodbye to our wonderful hostess teachers and students, who had taken such good care of us this days and shown great hospitality! Thank you all so much!
A long and sleepy bus-trip later we were in Keflavik. Time for more goodbye-saying, and phone numbers and mail addresses were exchanged. Many new friends have been made, but luckily it´s easier to keep in contact nowadays then when I was a student.
Iceland showed its most beautiful side when our plane took off, as to convince us that there is more to see. I'm sure many of us will come back!

We arrived in Keflavik around 11.00 on Monday. We took a bus to Reykjavik and walked around a couple of hours. After that we met with the group and headed to the Blue Lagoon. The Blue Lagoon was a wonderful experience. The water was warm and relaxing a steam made it look very mystical. After that relaxing experience we had a five hours buss drive ahead. We arrived in Saudakrokur around 23.30 and went to bed quite tired.

22.10
The students gave their presentations about their countries and schools and the results from their surveys. We were given a lecture about swimming and one about filming. The students started to work on their videos. In the evening we teachers where invited to Ritas home and had a lovely dinner there.

23.10
Today started with a visit to a horse farm. The Icelandic horses are very lovely and I had a chance to try riding one. The students continued working on their films. I made some shopping in the local leather shop, that produces leather from fish skin. Fish skin is ethically and ecologically produced. I also had time to go to swim to the local outdoor pool. In the pool area there are also lovely hot tubs. In the evening we visited Holar, a historical place in Skagafjordur. The church there is very beautiful and all the snow made it feel like Christmas. We climbed up in the clock tower and while there the guide sang a beautiful song that echoed up the tower. That was a very touching moment.

This week has been really fun.  We started on Tuesday with listening to presentations about countries and other schools that came to Iceland.  They also told us about their results from the sport questionnaire from their local school.  These presentations were really interesting and fun to listen to.  Later a man came that told us about the icelandic swimming history.  After lunch we were divided into 5 groups and the task was to make a shortfilm relating to health.  First we were brainstorming and putting ideas on paper.  We had break until 8 a clock and the icelandic kids asked the other kids to join us at a restaurant in the town to have a chat and get to know eachother.                             The next day we went to a horsefarm and took a look at the horses and the farm and ate we had hot chocolate and waffles but some people went horseriding.  Later that day we started to film and our group finished filming in one day. In the evening we went to Hólar which is a very historical place and fun to visit.  The last day we made a final touch in the shortfilm and we went swimming in Hofsós and there was a goodbye party there where we had dinner and watched all the videos together.  This week has been really great and we learned alot.

We started by figuring out what we wantet our film to be about, if we wanted it to be about eating healthy, exersising or both.
After we had decided that we wanted make a film about sports conecting people, we started filming in the gymnasium down by the school. We filmed some kids playing and practising basketball, and another class doing P.E. and streatches.
Also we drove home to Bryndís and there we filmed the importans of choosing and eating healty, but we didn´t use that in the final video because we thought it didn´t fit in with the messags we were trying to send.
The next day we filmed horse riding, football, dancing and lifting. The horse riding was filmed at Vatnsleysu, the horse farm we visited. The football was filmed in the gymnasium and we came accross a dance class wich we filmed. The lifting was filmed in the liftingroom above the gymnasium.
The last day we had every clips of film we needed and then the only thing left was to cut it toghether. We chose those who we liked and thought captsure the essens of what we wanted the movie to be about, and chose a good song to play under the filmclips. We also wrote some text to explain what was happening in eatch clip. Then we saved the movie and it was ready for pressenting.
We think it went very well, we are all happy with the outcome on the video and hope it´s a realy realy good one. We put a lot af eford and time into it, but we had a blast making it.
